A new report suggests that the two upcoming foldable phones could have stronger designs, thanks to Samsung's new technology.
The South Korean tech giant recently filed for a trademark that mentions ‘Armor Frame,' and it is a type of frame designed for smartphones. The trademark was filed on April 13 in Europe, South Korea, and the US. While the documents don't reveal much, it is being speculated by LetsGoDigital that Armor Frame could refer to the frame of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 or the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Could Samsung ditch aluminum frames in favor of titanium for its next foldables?
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Flip use aluminum frames, which make the phones heavy, but they are not as strong as steel. For its next set of foldable phones, the company could switch to carbon or titanium to increase the frame's strength while also reducing the weight. The trademark documents don't reveal which material is used to make the Armor Frame, but it is being speculated that it could have military-grade certification for safety from drops and shocks.
Previous reports have also claimed that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 could feature some form of dust and water resistance, something that is missing from their predecessors. An IP rating will certainly offer peace of mind to those who spend a bomb on owning a foldable phone. Samsung is also expected to use a stronger Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 so that it can withstand the usage of S Pen, but the device won't have a dedicated silo to store the stylus.
